The toll the pandemic took on employment and education, health care and manufacturing, virtually every facet of our lives, is painfully real. What is at the same time inspiringly real are stories about how the region’s businesses and industries, nonprofits, retailers, entertainment venues, Realtors, car dealers, schools, colleges and universities and health care facilities confronted the pandemic head-on and are moving forward through recovery and reinvention.

Holyoke Community College President Christina Royal, pictured, along with Greenfield Community College President Yves Salomon-Fernández and Elms College President Harry Dumay, have received national recognition for efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion.

The presidents of Holyoke Community College, Greenfield Community College and Elms College of Chicopee have been recognized for leadership in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the education technology company Cengage.
Thirteen college presidents nationwide received the AAC&U-Centage Inclusion Scholarship. Three were within 40 miles of each other in Western Massachusetts.

CHICOPEE, Mass. College of Our Lady of the Elms will hold its fourth annual Black Experience Summit in celebration of Black History Month on Friday, Feb. 26 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Elms College President’s Office and the Office of Diversity and Engagement. Due to COVID-19 protocols, this event will be held virtually via Zoom.
“The Black Experience Summit will bring national experts in student affairs leadership and social justice advocates to Elms College for an important dialogue on the educational, cultural, economic, spiritual, and social justice aspects of the Black experience,” said Antoinette Bonnie Candia-Bailey, Ph.D., vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer at Elms College.

Gretchen Givins Generett, interim dean and professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa., will give the keynote speech at the 4th annual Elms College Black Education Summit.

CHICOPEE Elms College will hold its fourth annual Black Experience Summit in celebration of Black History Month on Friday, Feb. 26.
The event, which runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., is hosted by the Elms College President’s Office and the Office of Diversity and Engagement.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, this event will be held virtually via Zoom. The free event, sponsored by the college in Chicopee, is open to the public. Online priority registration will continue through February 19.
