La Jolla —
Fireworks won’t be launched from Ellen Browning Scripps Park this Fourth of July, but city officials are still working with organizers to find another location for the La Jolla pyrotechnic show to light up the sky.
The long-running annual event has been on hiatus since 2017 after organizers struggled to pay for the expensive display. The event was canceled last year because of the pandemic and the countywide stay-home orders.
Still, event organizers from the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation were confident the show would resume now that those orders had been lifted. But that confidence was shaken this week when the city announced that organizers failed to obtain a necessary permit.

After years of planning, community reviews, a redesign of certain features and COVID-19-related delays, the Scripps Park restroom facility needs one more thing to stay on track for fall completion: a waiver of the summer construction moratorium.
After the La Jolla Parks & Beaches group voted to write a letter to the city of San Diego supporting such a waiver in March, the La Jolla Community Planning Association followed suit at its May 6 meeting.

Feb. 8, 1897: Ellen Browning Scripps began construction on her home on Prospect Street in La Jolla, naming the house South Molton Villa (sometimes spelled South Moulton Villa) after the London street on which she was born in 1836, according to “This Day in San Diego History” by Linda Pequegnat.
Scripps also built two cottages on the property, one for her library and the other for visitors. Another cottage nearby, built in 1904, was owned by her half sister Eliza Virginia Scripps. That cottage, called Wisteria Cottage, is the current home of the La Jolla Historical Society.
