The Department of Public Health announced a TikTok contest to encourage young people to get vaccinated before the start of the school year. The contest is for people ages 13 to 29. To participate, contestants should submit a TikTok video showing themselves getting vaccinated or include a creative message explaining, “This is why I got vaccinated.” All videos must tag @alcovidvaccine, #getvaccinatedAL and #ADPH. Winners will be determined based on creativity, originality and popularity measured by the numbers of likes and shares. The videos should be submitted by Aug. 6. I ve never been to the vast wilderness that is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Lake County, in northern Minnesota (about 5 hours northeast of Rochester.) It s definitely on my Minnesota Bucket List, though except perhaps not this year. At least, not right now, anyway. That s because fire crews from across the Land of 10,000 Lakes are battling several wildfires in the BWCAW and, as a result, have closed several campgrounds in that area. But wildfires can. Wildfire officials are bracing for potentially three Canadian wildfires to cross the border into Minnesota s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). “Today is a very critical day for us because the weather is so unstable,” Catherine Koele, a U.S. Forest Service information officer said Monday. “It s a pivotal day for us because it s all weather driven.” Canadian fires north of Ely in the Crooked Lake area are of the most concern currently, Koele said. “They re about 20 miles north of Ely,” Koele said. “The fires are in Quetico Provincial Park. We re in assessment for any fires that reach the border. We are in communication with Ontario. We do have a great relationship right now, but the biggest challenge is that we are in a national preparedness level five and the resources are thin.”
