Pa. firefighters rerouted to Minnesota to combat wildfires in the Superior National Forest PennLive.com 8 hrs ago
That trip to Idaho last week for Pennsylvania firefighters got sidetracked in a hurry.
A crew of 20 firefighters, consisting of a mix of Department of Conversation and Natural Resources (DCNR) personnel and volunteers from Harrisburg, left July 7 for Boise as fire season in the western United States has started quickly.
But soon after they left, they were rerouted to the Superior National Forest in Minnesota, where they have been fighting fires since they arrived.
Matt Reed, of the DCNR Bureau of Forestry and the point of contact for the crew mobilization, said it’s unknown whether the crew will spend part or all of their 14 days there before they are replaced by a new crew.
Drought fuels unusually high wildfire activity in Minnesota Downed trees hamper efforts to fight 65-acre blaze in Boundary Waters. July 14, 2021 6:13pm Text size Copy shortlink:
Crews fighting the Delta Lake blaze in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness have finally hacked through waist- and chest-high piles of old blown-down trees to actually reach the fire and are starting a containment boundary around it.
The 65-acre fire is the largest of four burning or smoldering across the Boundary Waters and Superior National Forest as soaring temperatures and persistent drought across Minnesota s crispy landscape fuel outbreaks. A fifth fire broke out Tuesday near Bemidji.

ELY– The U.S. Forest Service reported several fires in the Ely area late last week due to extremely dry conditions and a lightning storm on July 4. Hot shot crews continued to battle the largest, the Delta Lake fire, this week, as worsening drought has pushed the fire danger to extreme.
The Delta Lake fire is burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, in a thicket of waist- to chest-high blowdown dating back to 2016, that is hampering firefighter access, according to an update from the Forest Service’s Incident Command Team, which assumed unified command over the fire cluster response early Saturday morning.
