Hutchinson s Esmeralda Tovar-Mora talks DACA with President Joe Biden

When Hutchinson community activist Esmeralda Tovar-Mora had the opportunity to visit with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office last week, she shared with him a recent stressful experience in her life. Seated beside the president, she told him about when her permit issued under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program expired. The policy temporarily protects immigrants brought to the country as children from being deported and allows them legally to work and drive. It was her fourth renewal, and Tovar-Mora, brought here by her parents from Mexico when she was 2, thought that she’d applied in plenty of time.

Horizons Mental Health receives $3 1 million federal grant

SAMHSA is an agency in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services in the nation’s capital. Horizons was one of only six community mental health centers in Kansas selected as recipients of the expansion grants. Approximately 340 agencies throughout the nation are CBHCCs or have made an application to become one. To complete the steps required to be a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, Horizons will be required to provide a comprehensive number of treatment services that create access, stabilize clients dealing with crisis, and provide treatment and recovery services for those with the most serious and complex mental health and substance abuse issues.
