Man seriously injured in motorcycle crash in Winston-Salem

A man is in serious condition at a hospital after crashing his motorcycle with a car Monday night in Winston-Salem.  Police said they got a call about a car, driven by Recardo Cortes, 28, and a motorcycle, driven by Christopher Dolan Astrop, 48, crashing at the intersection of Akron Drive and Indiana Avenue shortly before 9 p.m.  Astrop was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center by EMS with serious injuries. He is still undergoing treatment. Police said no one else was hurt in the crash.

More vaccinated this week at hospital, health department

The second week with COVID-19 vaccinations is underway at the Wilkes County Health Department in Wilkesboro and at Wilkes Medical Center in North Wilkesboro. Meanwhile, the health department reported the 69th and 70th COVID-19-related deaths of Wilkes residents on Monday. Both people were in their 80s and had underlying conditions. Wilkes Health Department Director Rachel Willard said, “While we continue to see our hospitalizations and death toll rise, I am pleading in an effort to slow the spread. I’m asking everyone over the coming weeks to truly limit interactions to those within your immediate household.. in the home stretch of the holiday season.”

Triad hospitals ICU units feeling tighter squeeze from COVID-19

The Triad and North Carolina jumped again to record-high levels for COVID-19 hospitalizations in Monday s report from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. There were 3,192 North Carolinians hospitalized with COVID-19 as of noon Monday. That s up 69 from the previous high of 3,123 on Sunday. The pandemic s squeeze on the Triad s three major health care systems tightened again last week in patients requiring care in intensive-care units. The 17-county Triad region had a daily record of 934 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, up from 15 from the previous record of 919 on Sunday. The region has had more COVID-19 hospitalizations than any other region in the state for the past 10 weeks. However, the Charlotte region currently has 793 COVID-19-related hospitalizations.
