The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board is expected to take an important vote this evening. The members will consider whether students in grades K-8 should be required to wear masks when they return to school on Aug. 23, after a year spent largely at home, thanks to COVID-19. For some, this may be a heated topic.
But for all, itâs one that should be approached with a degree of humility. We should all want whatâs best for the children â the policy that will best protect their health, even if it carries some inconvenience â and even if itâs politically disagreeable to some.
The magazine released its hospital rankings for 2021-22 early Tuesday.
The 2021-22 report reviewed about 4,750 hospitals nationwide in 15 specialties â the primary focus of the report â along with 17 procedures and conditions.
Only 175 hospitals nationwide out of about 4,750 were ranked in at least one national top-50 specialty, while about 1,500 received at least one high-performance category ranking.
US News defines a high-performance specialty ranking as being outside the top-50 nationally, but âwas significantly better than average.â
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center achieved a high-performance ranking in neurology and neurosurgery, while Cone Health was ranked in gastroenterology and GI surgery, and urology. Forsyth Medical Center did not receive a high-performance specialty ranking.
The attorney for the family of John Neville says his clients havenât received fair treatment since five detention officers and a nurse were charged in Nevilleâs jail-related death.
âMy concern is that the Neville family, in my opinion, has not been treated well by those folks who represent the sheriff and the county,â said Michael Grace of Winston-Salem, the attorney for Nevilleâs estate. âThey deserve a little better based on how they comported themselves throughout this whole thing.â

The Triadâs three major health-care systems said Thursday they will require all employees to be fully vaccinated as part of a statewide public-health initiative.
Cone Health will be the first to put the mandate into place for its workforce, setting a July 30 deadline.
Novant Health Inc. will require full vaccination of employees by Sept. 15, while Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and parent company Atrium Health have set an Oct. 31 deadline.
