U S Lifts Pause on J&J s Covid Vaccine--Update

By Peter Loftus Vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson s Covid-19 shot should resume, U.S. health regulators said after investigating rare blood-clotting cases, restoring a key tool for filling gaps in the mass vaccination campaign. To alert doctors and recipients to the condition that led to a pause in the vaccine s use last week, J&J and regulators plan to add language to the shot s label and fact sheets warning of the clotting condition risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday lifted their recommendation to pause use of the shots, saying the benefits outweigh the risks. Their decision followed a vote by a federal vaccine advisory committee that recommended restarting use of Johnson & Johnson s Covid-19 vaccine in the U.S.

The Readers Forum: Friday letters

Indispensable The entire world has been consumed by COVID-19 for over a year, and it is my understanding that many epidemiologists have compared the ravages of this pandemic to the 1918 influenza pandemic that also swept the entire world. To be sure, COVID has altered our lives and dictated changes in routine behaviors more than anything in my lifetime. The Winston-Salem Journal continues to be an indispensable source of information during this unsettling disruption of our lives. Our hometown paper has provided regular updates of the horrible statistics as well as the heroic acts of health providers. We readers became better acquainted with the experts such as Dr. Mandy Cohen of the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Christopher Ohl of Wake Forest School of Medicine and Joshua Swift, the Forsyth County Public Health Director. There have been executive orders from Gov. Roy Cooper and cameo appearances from Dr. Anthony Fauci.

The goal is building a new and expanded center that will bring health, wellness, arts and intergenerational program partners under one roof. The dedicated space would go from 10,000 to 15,000 square feet. The current center is at 2895 Shorefair Drive in Winston-Salem. The new building would be on the same campus.

Wake Forest Baptist Health to begin construction for new Care Tower

Staff Report WINSTON-SALEM Patients and visitors will soon notice work taking place to prepare for the new $450 million care tower at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The project includes an upgraded emergency department, state-of-the-art operating rooms and enhanced adult intensive care units and is the next step in a series of significant investments in the Triad as a result of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s strategic combination with Atrium Health. The care tower will be built where Parking Deck B currently stands. Before this parking deck can be taken down, two helipads will be built on the top of Parking Deck C, near the emergency department and the Comprehensive Cancer Center, to accommodate medical helicopters from Wake Forest Baptist’s AirCare, and those from other hospitals and air ambulance providers.
