What started as a welfare check on a young woman turned into a tragic discovery Sunday night (April 4) after police in Raleigh found the body of 20-year-old
Christina Maria Matos at her apartment near North Carolina State University. According to
Matos turned 20 on Friday and her family grew concerned after not hearing from her between Friday and Sunday. According to the news outlet, Matos father called police when he couldn t get in touch with his daughter, a student at Wake Technical Community College. Officers arrived at the second-floor Signature 1505 apartment, where she lived with two roommates, around 7 p.m. Sunday, but found Matos deceased.

Raleigh, NC (March 17, 2021) – Today, Wake Technical Community College joined nearly 40 institutions to launch the Taskforce on Higher Education and Opportunity. Wake Tech and Taskforce member partners are driven to act by the challenges caused by the pandemic, income inequality, the changing nature of work, and levels of unemployment among recent college graduates nearly double those seen in the 2008 recession. The impact of this crisis is falling unevenly across groups and disproportionately impacting students from disadvantaged communities, despite their educational background.
