, president of District 202 Teachers’ Council, said District 202 superintendent Eric Witherspoon’s announcement was an abrupt end to their time spent working together.
“(The announcement) was a shock. We were not counseled and were not talked to,” Schelbert said. “It was just decided, and it appears that the decision was a unilateral action by Dr. Witherspoon that was not supported by other administrators or teachers.”
At a board meeting just two weeks ago, Schelbert said the administration and board members applauded the district’s current model, where academic courses are entirely remote and some extracurricular activities are offered in-person. Administration and board members agreed the model was working well and complimented it as “thinking outside the box.” The change in plan, then, felt sudden to Schelbert.

EVANSTON, IL A federal judge last week tossed out claims of civil rights violations by Evanston Township High School district officials. But allegations that administrators allowed sexual abuse by school security guards by failing to supervise staff were allowed to stand.
U.S. District Judge Franklin Valderrama last week issued a 30-page opinion dismissing all or part of four counts of a 10-count amended complaint filed in December 2019 on behalf of a former student and her mother.

Early voting for the April 6 General Election begins March 22. As with the Feb. 23 primary election, voters can cast their ballots in person in Room G300 of the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., through April 5.
Eight of the City’s nine wards have contested elections, with incumbents in six of them seeking re-election. Two candidates are vying for the position of City Clerk. In the School Board races, eight candidates have filed for the four open positions on the District 65 Board, while at District 202, only three – all incumbents – have filed for the four open positions.

Evanston’s chapter of the NAACP celebrated Black history and discussed local racial equity initiatives in education, policing and healthcare at their virtual Black History Month event Monday.
The event featured a brief video showcasing the importance of teaching Black history and honoring historic figures like Charles G. Woodson, who ensured Black history would not be left untold in the country’s chronicles. Virtual participants included representatives from Evanston/Skokie School District 65, Evanston Township High School District 202, Evanston Police Department and the Health and Human Services Department.
Additionally, Lucia Luckett-Kelly, creative educator at Phantasy Staircase Education, recited Langston Hughes’ poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”
