This week may be the beginning of another new first-shot vaccination push propelling Vanderburgh and other Indiana counties closer to herd immunity.
Teachers of any age are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Indiana through a federal initiative aimed at getting at least a first dose into the arm of every teacher, school employee and child care worker by the end of the month.
President Joe Biden challenged states to meet that goal on Tuesday. Even though Indiana has only opened eligibility to residents age 50 and older, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Wednesday that all teachers would be able to make appointments and get vaccinated through pharmacies participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. The federal government has directed those pharmacies to prioritize teachers, school employees and child care workers.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Local teachers made their voices heard on Wednesday, not by what they said, but what they wore.
Wednesday was #Blackout4Ed.
Evansville Teachers Association President Michael Rust says it’s a grassroots movement for Indiana teachers to take a stance.
Rust says teachers are not being heard about key issues, including a lack of prioritizing teachers for vaccines, lack of pay, and most recently House Bill 1005, among others.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The EVSC School Board has voted to extend Coronavirus Leave.
This decision allows educators who have to miss work because of a positive covid test or being a close contact, to do so without using sick or personal time.
The Evansville Teachers Association calls the move a way to ensure safety in schools because employees won’t be tempted to go to work while sick.
