One dead in fatal shooting at West Side intersection Monday morning

View Comments EVANSVILLE, Ind.  Police believe the victim of a fatal shooting on Evansville s West Side early Monday morning was shot in his vehicle while waiting for a traffic light to change. The victim is Dashambe Ignacio Atkins, 25, of Evansville, according to the Vanderburgh County Coroner s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday. Evansville Police Department officers were called to the intersection of North First Avenue and West Virginia Street around 3:20 a.m. to investigate reports of shots fired in the area as well as a wreck. When officers arrived, they found a crashed vehicle with a deceased male in the driver’s seat, later identified as Atkins. It appeared as if he had been shot multiple times, Sgt. Nick Winsett said.

This is breaking a lot of hearts here at Bosse, Athletic Director Tom Bealmear said. Bealmear recalled the former wide receiver s positive energy. He would go out of his way to say hello to me and high five. He had that kind of spirit around everybody. He lifted their spirits,  Bealmear said. He was positive. He was a good guy. Nykara Dixon, who also graduated from Bosse in 2020 and was pictured with him in that homecoming picture, recalled how Toone was always smiling and polite when she saw him after graduation. The two were on Bosse s football homecoming court together in 2019.

(WFIE) - Evansville police are investigating a shooting that happened early Saturday morning. EPD says officers heard multiple gunshots being fired from the 300 block of Taylor Ave. around 1:15 a.m. Dispatch also told officers that they were receiving multiple calls about shots being fired in the same area. When officers arrived, police say several vehicles were leaving the area and people were running, screaming someone had been shot. That’s when police say someone took them to the 1400 block of Judson St., which is where the victim was.
