EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation voted to approve a resolution stating their opposition to State House Bill 1005.
If the bill was passed, it would use state funds for grants to allow students to attend private schools.
EVSC’s board voted unilaterally to approve the resolution.
The bill is meant to provide grants to pay private school tuition for students who have disabilities, children of military servicemen and women, and children in foster care.
The last 12 months have put an enormous strain on school corporations everywhere, and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) is certainly no exception. The heart and soul of our schools, the teachers, have been asked to do things they ve never done before - never even thought of doing before. They had to figure out how to keep students properly distanced, and how to keep their classrooms clean and safe. They had to learn to teach virtually, at first to the entire class, and then to a mixture of in-person and at-home students. Those things, plus thinking and worrying about their own family members, and oh yeah, also trying to take care of themselves through all of it.

(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Next Level Teacher Compensation Commission released its report detal ailing recommendations for making teacher pay competitive with surrounding states.
During his 2019 State of the State Address, Governor Eric. J. Holcomb tasked the 13-member commission with providing proposals prior to the 2021 legislative session.
“I am grateful to the commission for its dedication to developing these recommendations,” Gov. Holcomb said. “The report provides a wide range of actions for all to review and consider moving forward. The options offer a base for continuing these important conversations about making compensation for our hard-working teachers more competitive.”
The report includes 37 recommendations for local school corporations and state government that could improve teacher compensation through expense reallocation, additional revenues or policy changes.
