Calls to Escambia County Emergency Medical Services have increased during the past year, and on Sunday night, a text to EMS staff seeking relief crews noted the department was beyond critical staffing levels for the night, forcing supervisors to run calls.
Interim Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore said the situation Sunday was caused by a combination of issues, including the shift being short-staffed after some call-ins and an entire ambulance crew having to remain on scene while Escambia County Fire Rescue fought a fire at Ascend Performance Materials.
A situation where there aren t enough EMS crews in trucks can lead to a 10-75 in which the county dispatch holds calls. Gilmore said when the county holds calls, it prioritizes sending ambulances, referred to as boxes, to the most critical calls first.

An Escambia County firefighter made his mom extra proud during Mother’s Day brunch Sunday.
“So it’s not everyday that a mom gets to watch one of her children save someone’s life,” Madeline Willis wrote in a social media post. “But that happened to me today. What an amazing Mother’s day!”
Willis is in Pensacola visiting with her son Jacob Hoskins, an Escambia County Fire Rescue firefighter assigned to the Ensley Fire Station.
They were at a McGuire’s for Mother’s Day brunch when a woman began to choke. Hoskins jumped into action, and saved the woman’s life.

Escambia County has named a new fire chief.
Jason Catrambone will join Escambia County on June 14 with more than 25 years of experience as an accomplished chief fire officer, including more than 18 years of command-level experience.
As the Escambia County fire chief, Catrambone’s duties will include supervising fire rescue staff, providing oversight and directing the implementation of internal operations, managing expenditures to the approved annual budget, developing goals and objectives and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Escambia County’s last fire chief, Rusty Nail, was hired in April 2018 and resigned in April 2019.
“It’s an honor to be chosen to join the Escambia County Fire Rescue team and Escambia County community,” said Catrambone. “I’m looking forward to working with this motivated group of men and women to continue to serve the residents and visitors of Escambia County dutifully and honorably.”
