Estonia s national final - Eesti Laul 2021 Preview The final of Estonia’s national selection show Eesti Laul is just around the corner, where the winner of the competition will become Estonia’s official representative at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam in May. The show will be hosted by presenters Grete Kuld and Tõnis Niinemets and it will take place at the Saku Suurhall in Tallinn. Estonian broadcaster ERR has revealed that some performances and the interval acts will be filmed 1 day before the final to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This year’s edition of Eesti Laul is a showcase of some of Estonia’s most experienced musical performers. Eleven of the twelve Eesti Laul finalists have participated in a previous edition of Eesti Laul. Four acts (or one third of the finalists) have been the official representative of Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest, with another act also performing for Estonia multiple times on the Eurovision stage.

Public urged to hold own, small family flag-raising independence day events

Source: Siim Lõvi /ERR Estonian Independence Day, February 24, will see a necessarily different set of events from most years, due to the ongoing pandemic. The traditional flag raising ceremony will still take place from just after 7.30 a.m. (i.e. sunrise), but the public are asked to stay home and hold their own flag-raising close family gatherings. The ceremony, at the Governor s Garden on Toompea, adjacent to the Riigikogu, is being broadcast by ETV, as well as in Russian on ETV+, and on radio station Vikerraadio.

11 proposals shortlisted for next nationally important funded project

The Culture Committee of the Riigikogu has identified 11 proposals for cultural buildings of national importance from which the final choice will be selected in the next six months. Funding will come from the Cultural Endowment. The 11 proposals are: the Anu Raud Center, the Arvo Pärt Music Hall, the Heliorg Concert Hall, the Kahn Center, the Narva Kreenholm Cultural Manufacturing Quarter, the Pärnu Art Gallery, the extension of the current National Opera Building, Saaremaa Museum, Tallinn Film City, Tartu Cultural Center and Science and Technology Center NOBEL. Chairman of the Culture Committee Aadu Must said that the number and versatility of submitted proposals was very gratifying and it had been very difficult to make a selection. 

Estonia Issued Stamp on Voldemar Panso

Theatre director, actor and theatre teacher Voldemar Panso (30.11.1920 – 27. 12.1977) is one of the most legendary names in Estonian theatrical history. Not only was he an outstanding director, charming actor, productive writer and a theatre leader with a vision, under whose leadership the Tallinn City Theatre operated in 1965–1970 and the Drama Theatre in 1970–76, he was a devoted lecturer and the founder of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. The same school that has produced the majority of current Estonian actors is still called the Panso school and every year, one student is awarded the Voldemar Panso award on Panso’s birthday.
