Annual LGBTI report: Estonia s legislation stagnated, hate speech on a rise

Annual LGBTI report: Estonia’s legislation stagnated, hate speech on a rise By 148shares In its annual review of the human rights situation of LGBTI people in Europe and Central Asia, ILGA-Europe, an advocacy group, listed Estonia with the countries that have seen a rise in hate speech and where same-sex partnership registration or marriage rights legislation has stagnated. The tenth edition of ILGA-Europe’s annual review of the human rights situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people in Europe and Central Asia documents progress and trends in the past year. The review reports a stark rise in abuse and hate speech against LGBTI people in many countries, but it highlights positively that more people are turning to the courts for the recognition of their human rights – or for the clarification of existing legislation that is meant to protect them.

Tallinn Deputy Mayor Kalle Klandorf survives no-confidence vote

Kalle Klandorf (Center) will continue in office as deputy mayor of Tallinn, after a no-confidence motion filed by the opposition parties at the city council failed to get a sufficient number of votes at Tuesday s off-scheduled sitting. The no-confidence motion, which followed a recent incident where Klandorf told an older woman with walking difficulties who was struggling to get by along a snow-covered Tallinn street to take a cab instead, was rejected on the 79-seat chamber by a vote of 32 in favor. At least 40 votes were required for the motion to pass. Chairman of the council, Tiit Terik, said that while the discussion initiated by the opposition parties highlighted shortcomings in the country-wide regulation concerning the clearing of the streets of snow, replacing the deputy mayor would not resolve these problems.

The deputy mayor from the Center Party came under criticism after suggesting that an elderly resident using a walking frame and struggling to move along a street that had not been cleared of snow take a taxi instead.

Estonia has a serial criminal party in the government – again

Estonia has a serial criminal party in the government – again By 112shares When the previous Estonian prime minister, Jüri Ratas – also the chairman of the centre-left Centre Party – resigned on 14 January, he did so because his party had yet again been suspected in criminal involvement in a corruption case; this wasn’t by far the first time the Centre Party – now again in the current government – has been suspected, and also prosecuted and found guilty, in corrupt deeds. On 12 January, the Estonian Public Prosecutor’s Office announced it suspected the Centre Party and five individuals, including the party’s secretary-general, Mihhail Korb, were involved in a corruption case.
