Nearly 10K homes needed in Greater Victoria over next 5 years to meet housing crisis: mayors

VICTORIA Mayors across Greater Victoria and the Urban Development Institute Capital Region (UDI) are stressing the urgency of housing availability in the region. The UDI, alongside the mayors of Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, Sooke and Langford, say that nearly 2,000 homes will need to open each year in Greater Victoria for the next five years to keep up with demand. The mayors say historic supply lows and the time it takes to approve municipal housing developments are stressing availability and affordability in the capital region. The longer we take the more it costs, said Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins in a release Wednesday. We can’t have that on our hands.

This owl was found dead in Saxe Point Park in Esquimalt. Martinelli has been working in the park for three years. Saanich, Oak Bay uninterested in regional police force as Esquimalt floats idea

VICTORIA When a woman was violently attacked in her Oak Bay home in 2017 by a machete-wielding intruder, Oak Bay police were joined by investigators from Saanich. Specialized officers from the larger municipality were called in to help investigate the complicated crime. “We do have an agreement specifically with Saanich,” said Kevin Murdoch, the Mayor of Oak Bay. “They are for things like forensics or other sorts of specialized services that are hard to maintain in a small entity.” It’s a partnership that has been working for decades and costs Oak Bay around $400,000 a year to maintain. “This marriage between Esquimalt and Victoria is not working,” said Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins on Tuesday.
