Taiwan shares end above 17,000 points 04/15/2021 06:32 PM CNA file photo Taipei, April 15 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan rose sharply Thursday by more than 200 points to close above the 17,000 mark, as investors ignored the mixed U.S. markets overnight, dealers said. Buying was seen across the board, with large-cap tech stocks gaining momentum in late trading and old economy and financial stocks attracting buying amid optimism about a cyclical recovery, dealers said. The Taiex, the benchmark weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended up 210.76 points, or 1.25 percent, at 17,076.73, after moving between 16,851.06 and 17,076.73. Turnover totaled NT$360.96 billion (US$12.7 billion). The market opened down 0.09 percent at the day s low, in the wake of a mixed U.S. market, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a modest 0.16 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 0.99 percent Wednesday, dealers said.

Large cap semiconductor stocks suffered more obvious profit-taking during the session, while buying continued to rotate to the old economy and financial sectors to give the broader market a boost, they said. The Taiex, the weighted index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended up 58.58 points, or 0.37 percent, at 15,911.67, after moving between 15,857.32 and 15,986.07. Turnover totaled NT$260.01 billion (US$9.17 billion).

Contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the most heavily weighted stock on the local market, led the tech sector s losses, while large-cap old economy stocks weakened after showing some resilience the previous day, dealers said. The Taiex, the benchmark weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended down 230.87 points, or 1.40 percent, at the day s low of 16,212.53, after hitting a high of 16,456.94. Turnover stood at NT$382.96 billion (US$13.78 billion).
