Syngenta Crop Protection and Chevron U.S.A. received a complaint on Tuesday in the Southern District of Illinois purporting that its products containing paraquat, a synthetic chemical compound used as the active ingredient in some of its herbicides, caused the plaintiffs to develop Parkinsonâs disease.Â
The complaint explained that Imperial Chemical Industries Limited and Chemical Industries PLC, predecessors of Syngenta, and Chevron Chemical Company, a predecessor of Chevron, manufactured products with paraquat between 1964 and 1986. Chevron reportedly used the paraquat products and distributed them for sale throughout the United States. After 1986, Syngenta continued to manufacture paraquat and use it in various products.Â
