LOS ANGELES (AP) â Tiger Woods was driving more than 80 mph â nearly twice the posted speed limit â on a downhill stretch of road when he lost control of an SUV and crashed in a wreck that seriously injured the golf superstar, authorities said Wednesday.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva blamed the Feb. 23 crash outside Los Angeles solely on excessive speed and Woodsâ loss of control behind the wheel. The athlete will not face any citations for his third high-profile collision in 11 years.
âThe primary causal factor for this traffic collision was driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and the inability to negotiate the curve of the roadway,â the sheriff told a news conference.

Woods was driving between 84 and 87 mph in a 45-mph zone when his Genesis SUV smashed into and hopped over a median, Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department officials said at a news conference, citing evidence investigators recovered from a data recorder. Woods car was traveling 75 mph when it hit a tree and rolled into a ditch in Rolling Hills Estates, a neighborhood in the posh suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes.

The cause of Tiger Woods February car crash in California has been revealed. Authorities announced on Wednesday that excessive speed was to blame.
After conducting an investigation, authorities said Woods was driving around 84-87 mph in a downhill section of road with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. According to the Associated Press, the portion of the road where Woods crashed is known for being dangerous.
