House calls are making a comeback owing to the intersection of COVID-19 and technology but patients are clicking video links rather than answering doorbells to see their doctors and other health care providers. It’s telehealth, or telemed, and while it’s been around a number of years, it mostly was available through companies like Teladoc Health and Doctor on Demand. Such companies offer an affordable and convenient way to obtain a diagnosis and a prescription for conditions such as sinus infections that don’t require hands-on exams.

Family reports woman shot by Gastonia Police officer has died A woman shot by a Gastonia Police officer on Monday morning remains listed in critical condition, although family members say she has passed away and they have signed papers to donate her organs. An officer responding to an overdose call at 12:12 a.m. Monday at 1215 Mountain Ave. reportedly encountered 33-year-old Shae Estelle Jones with a gun, according to Gastonia Police reports. The officer shot Jones, who was first taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Atrium Health s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Jones had been listed in critical, but stable condition Monday, but her condition worsened overnight.

Tuesday, family members shared on social media that she had died.  According to Gastonia Police, officers were responding to a reported overdose in the 1200 block of Mountain Avenue a little after midnight Sunday night. When officers arrived, they encountered a woman with a gun inside the home.
