Fire on Danielsville Road in Athens kills 1 person

Person found dead inside burning vehicle at Athens home Crews responded to Danielsville Road just before 11 p.m. to find a fully involved car that had spread to the home. Author: Jason Braverman (11Alive) Updated: 1:38 AM EST January 11, 2021 ATHENS, Ga. Firefighters found a person dead inside a burned-out vehicle at an Athens home late Saturday night, they said. Crews responded to Danielsville Road just before 11 p.m. to find a fully involved car that had spread to the home.  After containing the fire, investigators located the deceased person in the car.  Investigators from the Athens-Clarke County Fire & Emergency Services Department and Athens-Clarke County Police Department were called to investigate the incident.

Now that her little boy is 45 years old, O’Brien reluctantly assented that she’s got mad skills when it comes to yarn and needles.  “I’ve gotten quite good at it,” she said.  An Athens resident for the past seven years, the Maine native spends her downtime watching television (“The Queen’s Gambit” was a recent favorite) and creating crocheted goodies for family and friends.   “I do it when I have time to sit down,” said O’Brien, who moved to the Classic City from Florida. “I couldn’t tell you how long it takes to make something and I’ve never even considered trying to time it, but it’s not done in one setting. It’s usually a matter of days or weeks, depending on how busy I am. What I like to do in the evenings when the dishes are done is I’ll sit down and watch a movie and crochet.”

December 21, 2020 The U.S. Attorney’s Office says a former University of Georgia professor who admitted to authorities that he possessed hundreds of images of child pornography entered a guilty plea in federal court for his crime. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia said James Edward Monogan, III, 39, of Athens, pleaded guilty to one count possession of child pornography before U.S. District Judge C. Ashley Royal. Monogan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison to be followed by a maximum lifetime of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Monogan will also have to register as a sex offender. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. There is no parole in the federal system.

Man pepper-sprays three people during road rage incident An unknown man pepper-sprayed three people in a car outside their apartment on Lakeside Drive on Dec. 5 at about 11:45 p.m., according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department incident report.  The man, who was wearing military fatigues, had pulled his car in front of the victims’ car and jumped out. He then came up to their vehicle and sprayed pepper spray inside, causing the driver to experience temporary blindness, according to the report. He left as the group went back into their apartment to rinse their eyes out. The driver feared that the man wanted to harm them as he approached them. The man matched the description of a suspect for a reckless conduct incident during which a man brandished a gun at a convenience store, according to the report.
