ATHENS - Greek police said they have identified eight people who tore into the Athens University of Economics and Business on Oct. 29 and assaulted Rector Dimitris Bourantonis in his office, hanging a sign around his neck in support of squatters.
They were not named, as usual, but could face a range of charges including membership in a criminal gang, abduction and coercion over the attack that set off outrage and led the New Democracy government to propose tougher security measures for campuses.
The police department’s preliminary investigation, conducted by Attica’s Security Directorate, also includes charges of unlawful detention, violence, disruption to the operation of a public service and damage to property, said Kathimerini.
Lefteris Arapakis, 26, was named by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) a “Young Champion of the Earth” on December 15, the day of his actual name day.

ATHENS - With surveys showing more than half of Greeks are wary about its safety and efficacy, some 300,000 doses in a first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine are expected, with the New Democracy government trying to persuade people to take it.
But two shots are required a few weeks apart which means 150,000 people will be in line for the first shots, front-line health workers and those most susceptible: the elderly, people with underlying conditions and nursing home patients.

Lefteris Arapakis, a 26-year old Greek climate activist and entrepreneur, was named “Young Champion of the Earth” for Europe by the United Nations on December 11.
A graduate of the Athens University of Economics and Business, in 2017 Arapakis co-founded ENALEIA, a social startup inspired by Greece’s climate and economic crisis that teaches the unemployed sustainable fishing practices. ENALEIA was the first school for professional fishermen anywhere in the country.
Greek Reporter spoke to Arapakis about his mission to attract more people into the fishing sector by creating conditions for ongoing sustainable fishing in the future during an interview in 2019.
