Longtime Dedham resident Alice Gillis turns 103 Ariane Komyati, Correspondent WEST ROXBURY Alice Gillis, who lived on Pleasant Street in Dedham for 69 years, recently celebrated her 103rd birthday at Edelweiss Village. Gillis, who lived in Dedham for 69 years, has lived through the Spanish flu, World War I, World War II, the Great Depression, the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars, and is now celebrating her 103rd birthday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Gillis, a much-beloved resident at Edelweiss Village Assisted Living (part of the Deutsches Altenheim campus in West Roxbury) turned 103 on Friday, April 2. To mark this special occasion, a socially distanced birthday celebration was held in the dining room of Edelweiss Village with residents, staff, and Alice’s niece and cousin.

I ve lived a very good life, said Allice with a smile. Time goes by so quickly. Actually, it s hard for me to believe that I m now the matriarch of our family. And what a family it is. By her best guess, Alice s extended family includes 13 nieces and nephews, 25 grandnieces and nephews, 25 great-grandnieces and nephews and one great-great-grandnephew. Her oldest nephew is 89! Family pictures are displayed all over Alice s apartment at Edelweiss Village, as well as cards and letters from family members. Undoubtedly, longevity runs in Alice s family. Edelweiss Village and Rose s Bounty Collect Food Donations

Reply Edelweiss Village staff members Debbie McPhee and Donna Lyons Accept Donations (Deutsches Altenheim) Edelweiss Village, the highly regarded assisted living residence at Deutsches Altenheim, has partnered with Rose s Bounty Food Pantry during the pandemic to help people in the local community who are experiencing food insecurity. One of the most widespread effects of COVID-19 is food insecurity, said Kathy Labbe, Executive Director of Edelweiss Village. In Massachusetts as well as the entire country, people of all ages, including children, families and seniors, are struggling with hunger. We are hoping these food donations will help individuals in our community who are experiencing this devastating problem.

Deutsches Altenheim announces executive director of development Community Content Deutsches Altenheim Foundation has appointed Michael Jugenheimer, of Roslindale, executive director of development to lead its fundraising and development activities for the foundation in support of the Deutsches Altenheim senior care campus. Jugenheimer joins the foundation from the Boston Athenæum where he led major gifts development. His broad career in client-facing nonprofit development roles provides the experience needed to organize and develop the fundraising efforts of the foundation. Deutsches Altenheim Foundation was organized to raise and manage financial support for Deutsches Altenheim Inc. a 133-bed German Centre for long- and short-term skilled nursing, 62-apartment Edelweiss Village assisted living residence and Senior Place adult day program located at its campus in West Roxbury.
