On November 12, 1969, six women linked arms as they walked down the ramp of a large, ski-equipped Navy transport plane in Antarctica. Lois Jones, Terry Lee Tickhill Terrell, Kay Lindsay, and Eileen McSaveney all researchers from Ohio State University were joined by Pam Young, a scientist from New Zealand, and Jean Pearson, a reporter for the Detroit Free Press
as they stepped onto the ice near the Earth’s southernmost point. With that final step, they became the first women to visit the South Pole.
After lunching with a group of researchers and Navy men working at the Amundsen-Scott research station, the women posed for a photo in front of the iconic, mirrored marker for the geographic South Pole before boarding a transport plane back to McMurdo Station, located on the Antarctic coast. VANCOUVER, B.C. – Dr. Nigel Smith, Executive Director of SNOLAB, has been selected to serve as the next Director of TRIUMF. Succeeding Dr. Jonathan Bagger, who departed TRIUMF in January 2021 to become CEO of the American Physical Society, Dr. Smith s appointment comes as the result of a highly competitive, six-month international search. Dr. Smith will begin his 5-year term as TRIUMF Director on May 17, 2021. I am truly honoured to have been selected as the next Director of TRIUMF, said Dr. Smith. I have long been engaged with TRIUMF s vibrant community and have been really impressed with the excellence of its science, capabilities and people. TRIUMF plays a unique and vital role in Canada s research ecosystem, and I look forward to continuing the legacy of excellence upheld by Dr. Jonathan Bagger and the previous TRIUMF Directors .
Christopher “Chris” Lowery
Chris was born and raised in Tracy, CA and moved to Manteca in 1996.
Early in life, Chris showed a unique aptitude for taking apart, fixing, and putting back together any piece of machinery (his mother feared for her clocks and toasters!).
Chris started his plumbing career working for Bud’s plumbing. In the mid 1990’s he started his own business, Lowery’s Plumbing. He worked the business for several years performing service and repair and new construction. He then went to work for American Construction as a plumber and after two decades he was running multiple commercial construction projects.

Time zones are headache fuel. Rapidly moving between them is a good way to screw up your sleep schedule; ask anyone who s traveled overseas on business.
They ve also got political quirks here and there. The continental United States is split into four recognized time zones. Yet China which is around the same size has just one. Still, that s not to say the layout of Earth s time zones is totally random.
