DEVILS LAKE, N.D. Walking into a messy kitchen may be a cook’s biggest pet peeve. For Thomas McCurdy, it was a first step toward possibly cleaning up with a $100,000 prize.
MIDKOTA, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Midkota school achieved champion status as winners of the first annual Battle Royale contest sponsored by Lake Region State College in Devils Lake and a student from Midkota High School was the grand prize winner of Lake Region State College’s Battle Royale competition.
The school received $500 for its booster/school activities for being the champion and Hope Eikom of Tolna, ND, received a $2,000 scholarship to LRSC.

Termed the Battle Royale, LRSC operated in a tournament format and highlighted two schools or sports cooperatives from November to February. Votes were tallied on social media or submitted through webform. Area residents voted for their favorite school or team with winners advancing to additional rounds until two remained. The championship showcased Nelson County vs. Midkota.

Area students are among community college students who have been named to the 2021 All North Dakota Academic Team, which recognizes the academic achievement of community college students.
They include Luka Dragovic, Sarah Nadeau, and Nicholas Vercaigne, all Dakota College at Bottineau; Rhiannon Giguere, Breonna Rance, Mya Halverson, and Amanda Lang, all Lake Region State College at Devils Lake; Yarenci Gonzalez and Tiffany Sewald, both Williston State College.
“Only the most highly driven and accomplished students are named to the All-North Dakota Academic Team,” said North Dakota University System Chancellor Mark Hagerott. “The 17 students from throughout our system who were named to the team this year are tremendous examples of academic achievement and volunteer spirit.”
