PUBLIC leaders in Cumbria have implored the public to stay local in an open letter to the county s residents. The letter, signed by MPs, council chief executives and other figureheads, says: All authorities and partners in Cumbria are appealing to residents and visitors to adhere to the new lockdown guidance which is in place to protect the NHS and save lives. Whilst it may be tempting to go out for a scenic drive in the Lake District, now is the time to stay home, look after one another and play your part to make sure that Cumbria is ready for the return of visitors when it is safe to do so.

Plans to revamp activity centre near Ulverston approved by Lake District National park Authority

PLANS to revamp a former school now used as a residential training centre with a dwelling for the owners and operators of the site have been approved by the Lake District National Park Authority. River Deep Mountain High, sited at School House, Lowick Green, is an outdoor activity facility based in Lowick near Ulverston who plan to create provision of ancillary buildings, engineering works, access track and hardstanding for business use, a report has found. Lowick Parish Council have no objections that they wish to comment on. Cumbria County Council as Highway Authority and Lead Local Flood Authority had no objections to the proposals.

Discordant feature in the landscape – plans for orangery in Ulverston refused

PLANS to construct a timber orangery at a site in Ulverston have been refused as the development would cause harm to the overall character and appearance to the area, a report found. Mr and Mrs Moryousseff submitted the plan proposals for the site at Low Water End, Water Yeat, Ulverston to the Lake District National Park Authority for their approval. A report found that the main issues in this case are: • The principle of this development in this location • Appearance and impact on the character of the area • Impact on the amenity of neighbours No representations have been made about this plan.

Visually incongruous and inappropriate – glamping pod application in Coniston refused

PLANS to add one K2 family glamping pod for holiday accommodation at a hotel have been refused. The proposed pod, to be sited at Wilsons Arms in Torver, would be 5.8 metres long, 3.47 metres wide and three metres high with a curved roof constructed Decra ‘Oberon’ cladding. Matthew Mayvers of Caterkwik submitted the application which was supported by Torver Parish Council. The Lake District National Park Authority refused the application stating it would harm the character and appearance of the locality by introducing a visually incongruous and inappropriate structure that would be detrimental to to the character and quality of the environment .

Helvellyn course offers chance to learn ice axe and crampon basics

THE public is being invited to learn the skills needed for winter walking in the Lake District fells as part of a course. People will be taught the basics of using ice axes and crampons during one-day courses on Helvellyn being held by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA). The courses will be led by the LDNPA s fell top assessors, one of whom ascends Helvellyn each day over winter to provide a boots on the ground condition report.
