COVID-19 cases continue to drop in North Georgia System facilities COVID-19 hospitalization numbers within the Northeast Georgia Health System are now the lowest they have been since October. As of yesterday, 68 hospitalizations were reported throughout the system’s facilities, compared to 335 on Jan. 8. The last time the numbers were that low was Oct. 7. In addition, there are 23 available ICU beds at the Gainesville hospital and four at the Braselton hospital. As for vaccinations, 10,990 vaccines have been administered to employees and 13,256 have been administered to the community. FoCo4Frontliners initiative created to thank all 3,200 employees at Northside Forsyth Hospital The Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce recently launched a new initiative to say “thank you” to the county’s many healthcare workers. Starting with Northside Hospital Forsyth, the Chamber is hoping to raise enough money to give each of the 3,200 employees a special gift to show their appreciation.

Food Truck Friday returns to Lake Lanier Olympic Park

For the fifth year running, Lake Lanier Olympic Park will host the City of Gainesville s Food Truck Friday events. In fact, the first Food Truck Friday on March 12 marks the beginning of the city s 2021 event season. After his first foray into the event in 2020, which was hampered a bit by the coronavirus pandemic, Lake Lanier Olympic Park Special Events Manager Eric Larsen said he’s looking forward this year s festivities. We have great vendors eager to come back and some fun new additions,  Larsen said in a press statement. “It really is a great way to wind down the week with a relaxing evening on our plaza.”

Running away from 2020 into cold Lake Lanier annual Polar Bear Swim draws crowd Dozens of people ran into Lake Lanier for the 23rd annual Polar Bear Swim on Jan. 1, 2021, at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. - photo by Kelsey Podo As cold rain poured over Lake Lanier Olympic Park beach, dozens of people excitedly dashed into the lake on New Year’s Day, leaving 2020 in the sand.  “I’m done with 2020,” Victoria Parsons said before running into the water while wearing scrubs. As a travel nurse based in Flowery Branch, Parsons said she felt like her work attire was fitting for the 23rd annual Polar Bear Swim, hosted by the Lake Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club. This year’s event featured swimmers running into the lake from the beach instead of having people gathering close to each other and waiting their turn to jump off a dock. The theme was “running away from 2020.”
