Sheep sheering returns to the 1850s Homeplace inside Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area this weekend.
Executive Director Aviva Yasgur with Friends of Land Between the Lakes invites the public to come out to the Homeplace to watch and visit with sheep shearer Gary Lawson as he demonstrates the historic skill of hand shearing sheep on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. Then from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Yasgur says you can watch and learn as wool is spun on the many different types of wheels on the farm.
On Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Yasgur adds visitors can watch how the new sheep fleeces are dyed and turned into colorful handmade woolen goods to be used on the farm.

WINCHESTER, Ky. â The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service has named H. Scott Ray the Forest Supervisor of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
Ray has been the Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Daniel Boone National Forest for the last four years and has been serving as acting Forest Supervisor there since December 2020. In his new position, he will oversee 709,000 acres spread across 21 counties in Eastern Kentucky from the Forest Supervisorâs office in Winchester, Kentucky.
âThe Daniel Boone National Forest is truly a special place and I am honored to have this opportunity. I am excited to continue to work with all the incredible employees, partners, and volunteers that help steward this wonderful forest,â said Ray.
The Friends of Land Between the Lakes have released its jam-packed programming for the month of April.
The group is inviting all home educating families to use the outdoors as a classroom for Homeschool Month during April at the Woodlands Nature Station.
Homeschooling families can pick up a âNature Discovery Activity Bookâ at the Nature Station that will be able to guide children through a variety of exploration activities and teach about nature through various subjects.
The Nature Station is open everyday in April and books and activities are available from the station from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The group has special programs specifically geared for homeschoolers scheduled throughout the weekdays and month.
