A backcountry skier has died in an avalanche near a remote peak in California’s rural, mountainous north.
A skier and a snowboarder from Ashland, Ore., trekked up to a ridge on a snowy flank of Etna Mountain in Siskiyou County on Wednesday to an elevation of about 6,650 feet. As they prepared to strap into their gear for the ride down, they were caught in an avalanche and carried down the mountain, according to an incident report from the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center.
