Edward Szmergalski   Updated 3/4/2021 5:01 PM A Mount Prospect police commander and two other officers were suspended and reassigned for creating an unofficial subpoena document during an investigation into a detainee s escape from Northwest Community Hospital. Police Chief John Koziol said Cmdr. Edward Szmergalski and investigators Bartek Giera and Eric Knippel were moved from the department s investigations division to the patrol unit as a result of an internal inquiry. Giera and Knippel requested the move, Koziol said.

Mount Prospect District 57 hires from within for next superintendent Mary Gorr has been chosen as the new superintendent for Mount Prospect Elementary District 57. She begins in that role July 1.   Updated 3/3/2021 5:11 PM The Mount Prospect District 57 school board has chosen longtime district administrator Mary Gorr as its next superintendent. Gorr, currently assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, will assume the top spot July 1, replacing the retiring Elaine Aumiller. Gorr has been with District 57 since 2011, and previously served as principal of Westbrook School for Young Learners.   She was chosen from a field of more than 40 qualified applicants, district officials said. From the start, Mary stood out as an exceptional candidate, school board President Eileen Kowalczyk said in an announcement of the appointment. She has been an asset to the district, and we felt she would be a great fit for this important role.

William Grossi Updated 3/4/2021 9:10 PM A Mount Prospect mayoral candidate and current village trustee is calling for trustee candidate Terri Gens to withdraw from the race and be removed from the Mount Prospect Public Library board for using a racial slur during an endorsement interview with the Daily Herald. In a letter to the Daily Herald, Trustee William Grossi also suggests that another trustee candidate who came to Gens defense, Peggy Pissarreck, should drop out of the race as well.

$26 8 million redevelopment of downtown Mount Prospect shopping center gets OK from board

Updated 3/3/2021 9:27 PM Mount Prospect village board members voted Tuesday to approve the redevelopment of the Prospect Place shopping center, as well as a package of more than $4 million in financial incentives to support the downtown project. The redevelopment of the property long associated with Keefer Pharmacy calls for the demolition of the current site, bounded by Prospect Avenue, Wille Street, Evergreen Avenue and Route 83.   First Equity Group plans to replace it with a $26.8 million, five-story building housing 80 apartments and about 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurant space. Community Development Director Bill Cooney said the village will contribute up to $3.7 million from the Prospect and Main Tax Increment Financing District toward the project. The village also will waive permit fees and about $350,000 in impact fees.
