Mifflin Co Academy of Science and Tech receives welding grant | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 5, 2021 LEWISTOWN The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology was one of nine schools to receive a grant from the American Welding Society Foundation to improve the training capacity of its welding program. According to a news release from the AWS, the Academy was presented with a $25,000 grant, which it will use to support the needs of local industries. “We initially applied for the grant to help get some of the critical testing equipment needed to become an accredited testing facility through AWS,” said Mike McMonigal, supervisor of adult education and post-secondary education at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology. “We hope that utilizing the grant will get our students and the program the edge it needs to be a leading welding facility within central Pennsylvania.”

The vision that brothers B.B. and D.D. Dougherty had when they created what now is Appalachian State University has been fulfilled by people like Etta Lee Triplett Idol, who died Dec. 7 at age 98. The Dougherty brothers, born and raised in Boone, dreamed of improving educational opportunities for children of their region by establishing an institution of higher learning to produce teachers for the public schools. It’s clear in a 2015 recorded interview with Appalachian representatives that Etta understood at the time the great opportunity her uncle provided when he paid the school’s $64 quarterly tuition for her in the early 1940s. She was a diligent student.

Golden Hawk Wrestling Grapples with Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team is back in action Thursday when they travel to Mount Pleasant for a non-conference triangular against Fort Madison and the Panthers. The Golden Hawks come into the night with a 3-5 dual record on the season. Mid-Prairie was last in action on Saturday when they won the team title at the Colton Allen Memorial Tournament at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman by a half point over Alburnett, led by individual champions Cael Garvey at 195lbs and Josh Wallington at 220lbs. Mid-Prairie’s last dual action was a week ago at home where they fell to Monticello 46-36 and Iowa City Regina 39-36 in a River Valley triangular.
