A possible shoplifting incident took a heartwarming turn when a cop paid for some stolen socks that a homeless man couldn t afford.
A discount store in Westchester County called the cops on a homeless man trying to steal socks – but instead of cops taking him out in cuffs, they picked up his tab.
Body camera video posted on the Mount Vernon Police Department’s Facebook page shows the officers arrive at a Dollar Tree on Saturday and speak with a manager before approaching the would-be shoplifter, who admits he was taking the merchandise. Mount Vernon s city comptroller insisted just last month she had complied with a court order to pay outstanding bills to two of the city s fuel vendors - but the Mount Vernon Police Department says it s still dealing with a low supply of gas.
According to Police Commissioner Glenn Scott, the police department was reduced to a ration system to procure fuel for police vehicles.
He says, temporary arrangements had been made at a local gas station for refueling.”
City Comptroller Deborah Reynolds blames Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, saying it s her job to order fuel for Mount Vernon s Department of Public Works, police and fire departments.

The Westchester County district attorney has asked federal authorities to investigate “pervasive and persistent” civil rights violations involving the Mount Vernon Police Department, including illegal strip searches and excessive use of force.
District Attorney Mimi Rocah asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate whether the suburban New York City department is “systematically violating peoples’ civil rights,” citing “potentially unlawful conduct by several former and current” officers.
