Detroit mother and son died 8 days apart due to COVID-19 complications

This obituary is part of “We Will Remember,” a series about those we’ve lost to the coronavirus. They had much in common. They were both joyful, humorous, generous individuals who loved to talk to people and made sure to keep in touch with family and friends, favoring phone calls and in-person conversations over texting. Marian Ann Williams-Franklin and her son, Troy Franklin, both from Detroit, died eight days apart of COVID-19 complications. Marian, 78, was born and raised in Tennessee. She attended Tennessee State University, where she met and later married her husband, Harry Gump Franklin. They would have celebrated 56 years of marriage last month.

Woman who loved to sing and pray died from COVID-19 complications

Detroiter Brenda Rena Lewis loved to have gatherings, and they involved singing, praying and eating. The Northwestern High School graduate and retired health care worker was 68 when she died April 16 as a result of COVID-19 complications at Ascension Providence Hospital in Southfield. “My mom loved to cook and bake for everyone, her church and neighbors,” said her daughter Lakisia Boone. “The holidays were her days because she loved to shine. She would do everything herself.” With her strong soprano voice, she traveled to churches to sing and was a member of several singing groups, including the Voices of Heaven, Jack Nelson Singers and the Howard Lemmons Singers.
