EU heads of states have agreed on a 55% reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, but the inclusion of carbon sinks and the choice of 1990 as the baseline year have led environmentalists to criticise the deal for lacking ambition.
When EU leaders agreed a new climate goal for 2030 on Friday morning after a night of marathon talks, there was a smell of victory in the air.
“Kudos to the EU for pulling the future into the present, with huge benefits for people, planet and profit,” said Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Japan set to incorporate 2050 carbon neutrality goal into law

The Japanese government has decided to stipulate in law its goal of achieving virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
Through the unusual move of incorporating a long-term goal into legislation, the government hopes to demonstrate, both inside and outside Japan, its determination to promote net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The UK Government has set out its ambitious approach to prepare for the effects of climate change at home and overseas, helping vulnerable countries adapt and become more resilient.
It published its ‘Adaptation Communication’ following the virtual Climate Ambition Summit over the weekend, which brought together 75 world leaders as well as businesses and civil society to make strong new commitments to tackle climate change ahead of COP26, being held in Glasgow in 2021.

Cambodia is committed to fighting against climate change with clear and effective measures and strategies, although Cambodia has less greenhouse gas emissions at the global level.
The commitment was highlighted by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia in his remarks at the “Leader-level virtual Climate Ambition Summit” held via Videoconference on Dec. 12, at the invitation of H.E. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, H.E. Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of France, H.E. Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of Chile, and H.E. Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy.
