Belarus presides over UNECE ExCom session in Geneva
MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) - The 112th official session of the Executive Committee of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on 14 December 2020 was chaired by Permanent Representative of Belarus to Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich, BelTA learned from Belarus Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva.
The session considered the organizational aspects of holding the 69th session of the UNECE “Promoting circular economy and sustainable management of natural resources” due in Geneva in April 2021, including its provisional agenda and a draft high-level statement.
The preparation of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in the UNECE region scheduled for March 2021 was also on the agenda.
Belarus active longevity strategy aimed at enhancing quality of life in old age
MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) - The national strategy Active Longevity 2030 provides conditions for social involvement and full participation of the elderly in the life of the society, Tatyana Fyodorova, head of the main department of social services and social assistance at the Labor and Social Security Ministry told the media on 16 December, BelTA has learned.
“People over 65 years old account for 15.4% of the total population in Belarus, and this figure is growing. According to forecasts, the share of elderly population may reach almost 20% in 2030. The society will be changing and this should be taken into consideration while planning all the areas of activities. The strategy stipulates the main areas of societal development taking into account the demographic aging of the population,” said Tatyana Fyodorova.

UNESCO and GECF sign a Memorandum of Understanding to foster scientific cooperation

On 8 December 2020, UNESCO and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster collaboration and exchange of scientific expertise and knowledge to address emerging environmental challenges towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 agenda. Following the decision of the Executive board in its 209th session, the agreement was signed by Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences at UNESCO and HE Yury Sentyurin, the Secretary General of the 20-member coalition of the leading gas exporting countries of the world.
