New deaths from COVID-19 remained high Wednesday in Georgia and South Carolina even as cases seem to be dwindling. Georgia added 139 new deaths to blow past 12,000 to reach 12,135 with 4,074 new cases for 731,826, the Department of Public Health reported. Richmond County saw 91 new cases for 16,490, Columbia County had 55 more for 9,406, McDuffie County added 30 for 1,390, and Screven County saw 11 more at 691. All other counties had single-digit increases: seven in Burke for 1,503, one in Jefferson for 1,411, four in Jenkins for 655, three in Lincoln for 433, four in Warren for 322, and two in Glascock for 122. Wilkes County at 587 and Taliaferro at 88 were unchanged. Columbia County suffered two more deaths for 114 total, Burke County lost a patient for 24 and Jenkins County had a new death for 35, with deaths from Aiken, pushing the area s toll to 740.

New COVID-19 cases shot past 7,000 in Georgia and stayed above 4,000 in South Carolina as positive test rates shot up there and across Augusta. Georgia added 7,072 new cases to reach 609,868 with 65 new deaths for 10,100, the Department of Public Health reported. Richmond County saw 133 new cases for 13,557, Columbia County had 71 more for 7,770 and McDuffie County added 16 for 1,065.
