NORFOLK, Va. â The Norfolk-based USS Vella Gulf has suffered another setback, keeping the cruiser in port even longer.

A new set of mechanical issues are extending repairs on an almost 30-year-old guided-missile cruiser that has been sidelined since February, USNI News learned on Monday.

Vella Gulf (CG-72) discovered significant debris in the lube oil system of the cruiser’s main reduction gear, an issue that will require more time at the pier and likely see the cruiser remain at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., for at least two more weeks, USNI News understands.

The U.S. Navy is reportedly considering moving two ships into the Black Sea after Russia announced it was sending 10 vessels there amid a buildup of forces near Ukraine.
Navy ships could be headed to the Black Sea in the next few weeks, CNN reported Thursday. The move is meant to show support for Ukraine as Russian troops assemble near the country s eastern border, an unnamed defense official told the outlet.

A plan to keep the Navy’s guided-missile cruiser fleet operating through the end of the 2030s is struggling as the ships show there’s a very real cost in time and money to keep old platforms around for the sake of having a larger fleet.
