Five Rivers Child Care foster carers homelessness fundraiser

A volunteer team of foster carers and looked after children have been working together to raise money and awareness for Cornwall homelessness this winter. The children and young people taking part, aged between seven and 15, are all currently in foster care through the Truro-based independent fostering provider and social enterprise, Five Rivers Child Care. The idea to fundraise for homelessness came from a group of young people in care during a Make a Difference meeting. The meetings are made up of fostered children from across the West Country who worked together to plan the activity. Ten young people, nine carers and six Five Rivers staff members, have walked a combined total of just over 400 miles, meeting their goal, along the South West Coast Path from St Agnes to Penzance and Prussia Cove to Lizard Point, raising over £460.

Former taxi driver from Middlesbrough urges others to consider a career in fostering

AS the coronavirus pandemic continues to negatively impact many industries across the UK, a foster dad from Middlesbrough is calling on others to consider a career change. With UK unemployment rising, and the number of people claiming work-related benefits rising by 1.5 million since the start of the pandemic in March, Rasub Afzal, who left his job as a taxi driver to become a foster carer, thinks it could be a viable career option for many others facing job uncertainty in the area. With the taxi trade being one of many industries suffering as a result of Covid-19, and more children and young people in a need of a loving and safe home every day, Rasub believes fostering can provide the job security and stability that many people are looking for in current times.
