An island-wide travel shutout should be introduced in Ireland to stem the spread of the new Covid variant, Sinn Fein has demanded.
Stormont deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill called on Micheal Martin to pursue a joined-up travel policy with the Stormont executive to prevent travel between Great Britain.
Ms O’Neill insisted her stance was not politically motivated, and said her party also favoured a ban on all non-essential journeys within the island of Ireland, including cross-border trips.
At an emergency executive meeting on Monday night, a Sinn Fein proposal to introduce a GB travel ban was voted down by fellow executive ministers.

DUBLIN (Reuters) -Patients were being treated in the back of ambulances in a Northern Ireland hospital car park on Tuesday, a health official said, a day after a warning that COVID-19 was putting healthcare under “unbearable pressures”.
The British-run region has been in and out of some form of lockdown since mid-October when it was one of Europe’s worst COVID-19 hotbeds. The most recent curbs were lifted last week, when all shops, restaurants and pubs serving food reopened.
While those measures slowed the spread of COVID-19, cases have risen in the last week and are at their highest in Mid and East Antrim, near Antrim Area Hospital where Irish broadcaster RTE showed footage of ambulances lined up with their engines on to keep patients warm inside.

Northern Ireland will be plunged into a six-week lockdown on Boxing Day as ministers warned draconian action was required to prevent the health service being overrun amid rising coronavirus cases.
The Stormont Executive agreed to close non-essential retail and close-contact services such as hair salons, while pubs, cafes and restaurants will be restricted to takeaway services.
