As support for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement continues to grow around the world, the “Irish Artists’ Pledge to Boycott Israel” has just passed the 1034 signatory mark. The pledge, which was launched a decade ago, sees Irish cultural legends like Stephen Rea, Sinéad Cusack, Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Damien Dempsey, Sharon Shannon, Robert Ballagh, Mary Black and Kíla joined by exciting up-and-comers such as Sisterix, CMAT, Kneecap, TPM, Steo Wall and Roisin El Cherif as well as established figures like Kevin Barry, Joe Rooney, Paul Duane and Eugene O’Hare.
The Pledge – which commits signatories to refrain from performing in the apartheid state of Israel – was launched by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) in August 2010. Modelled on the successful cultural boycott of Apartheid South Africa, it has been called “a ground-breaking initiative” by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)

The involvement of Ireland’s two police forces in the project has angered campaigners and politicians from across the island. They have pointed out that the Israeli ministry oversees prisons where Palestinians are routinely abused and a police force active in settlements which violate international law.
The garda force should withdraw from an EU-backed law-enforcement project because of Israel’s involvement, a Palestinian advocacy group has said. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) has
