Story I wish I never needed to tell wins Darrin Zammit Lupi major award

Maltese photojournalist Darrin Zammit Lupi has won the prestigious Yannis Behrakis International Photojournalism Award for 2021 with a series of moving images chronicling the life of his daughter, who died in January.  Describing the award for his photo essay as an “impossibly huge honour”, he said it was “deeply moving” and “extremely bitter-sweet”.   Zammit Lupi’s emotional story in pictures titled ‘The first photo I ever took of my daughter, and the last’, was recently published by Reuters. It documents the courageous battle fought by his 15-year-old daughter Rebecca, known as Becs, against a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer during the pandemic.

Non-COVID patients are feeling abandoned

A man whose mother passed away within two months from her cancer diagnosis is calling for more sensitivity and empathy in the caring of non-COVID patients who are “feeling abandoned” as the island focuses its efforts on coronavirus patients. “They were two months of torture and it felt like I was slowly dying with her,” Fr Charles Cini, the Floriana parish priest, told Times of Malta “My mother, Mary, who never tested positive for the virus, was left confused and on her own during the last weeks of her life. Our case is not the only one – there are others who are facing this unfair situation.”

New outpatients block for Mater Dei approved

The Planning Commission on Wednesday gave its green light for the development of a brand-new outpatients block at Mater Dei hospital, which will cover the area in front of the present mortuary and the dysfunctional helipad which was turned into a parking area.  The five-storey building will include an underground multi-storey car park to cater for 658 car parking spaces as well as an underground bus terminus. Only just over a third of the total floor area will be used for clinical services. The site has a total area of 16,550 square metres.  The new outpatients block, which had been recommended for approval by the Planning Directorate, will be approximately three metres higher than the rest of the hospital building and will remove the traffic congestion around the hospital’s entrance.
