Coercive policies in China’s far western region of Xinjiang have led to a sharp decline in birthrates for Uighurs and other minorities, which could add to evidence of genocide, an Australian think tank said in a report released on Wednesday.
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) report, citing official Chinese data, said that there has been an “unprecedented and precipitous drop in official birthrates in Xinjiang since 2017,” when China began a campaign to control birthrates in the region.

Floyd case a lesson for Chinese
By Rabiye Qadeer
The George Floyd case has aroused my envy and admiration. Congratulations to Americans!
The trial concluded last month in the case of Floyd, which had captivated the world. What interested me was not only the court’s verdict, but also the process of the trial, as it took eight weeks to try the defendant in the case.
Today, in my homeland of East Turkestan, the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, more than 1 million people have been jailed without trial on charges of separatism and terrorism.
More than 1 million people are held in camps indefinitely simply because their beliefs and customs differ from those of the Han Chinese. Almost none of them were prosecuted. They were summarily sent in handcuffs to prisons, with black bags over their heads.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will meet U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. on April 16.
Joe Biden chose Yoshihide Suga as the first foreign head of state with whom to meet. In March, America’s secretaries of state and defense visited Japan and held the Japan-United States Security Consultative Committee, or “two plus two dialogue,” with their counterparts.
This is a sign of how much the Biden administration values Japan. It is not just because Japan is a great economic power that shares American values. It is also important that it is on the front lines with China, a source of deep disturbance of the peace.
