During a House Agriculture Committee hearing this morning, Iowa Congressman Randy Feenstra called on Ag Committee Chairman David Scott to hold a hearing on exploring issues with fairness and transparency in the cattle market.
He says many independent cattle producers are fighting to keep from losing money while packer profits continue to rise.
Feenstra says there are several bills proposed to attempt to address the broken cattle markets and those need to be discussed before Congress reauthorizes Livestock Mandatory Price reporting.
Feenstra says if the Ag Committee fails to take action on this, within 6 months there will be many independent cattle producers who will go out of business.

The U.S. House Agriculture Committee has added Iowa Congressman Randy Feenstra’s proposal for derecho relief to the $1.9 trillion pandemic relief bill Democrats are planning to pass.
Feenstra, a Republican from Hull, says the bill sets aside a total of $4 billion for U.S.D.A. programs.
“There’s part of the bill that sort of looked at helping producers, especially when it came to catastrophes, but the catastrophe was not identified,” Feenstra says, “so I created an amendment that identified catastrophe…as derechos or hurricanes or fires.”
