According to an agreement the State Appeal Board approved Monday, the building s boiler system leaked in November 2018, causing carbon monoxide to seep from the basement. The appeal board agreed to reimburse workers compensation insurers for the cadets medical payments because it is alleged that lack of maintenance led to the leak, said Lynn Hicks, a spokesman for the Iowa Attorney General s Office.
In total, the state will pay about $31,000 to EMC Insurance and the Iowa Municipalities Workers Compensation Association, which insures city and county employees. The payments cover claims for 21 cadets who were sleeping at the academy at the time of the leak.
