There were at least 50 people waiting for free pork loins on Thursday morning in the Bomgaars parking lot.
It was part of Iowa Select Farmsâ annual Operation Christmas Meal, a philanthropic endeavor that began at the Iowa State Fairgrounds 10 years ago and since has branched out into communities that are touched by the fifth-largest pork producer in the country.
The Iowa Falls company gives 5-pound loins to people in scads of communities across the state to ensure that families have a proper Christmas meal.
âWe werenât sure we were going to be able to do it this year,â said Allyson Mathisen, communications specialist for Iowa Select Farms, in reference to the coronavirus pandemic. âWe know that this loin for them is a Christmas meal that they wouldnât have otherwise been able to afford.â

Since 2011, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation has hosted Operation Christmas Meal, a hunger relief effort supporting Iowa families in need of a helping hand, especially during the holidays. Throughout the first two weeks of December, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation hosts Operation Christmas Meal events where they distribute free 5-pound pork loins and a recipe and pork preparation booklet.
The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation once again offered community-based Ignite the Spirit opportunities aimed at increasing awareness of hunger locally and igniting the spirit of service by giving local student groups the tools–pork!–to help even more families during the holiday season.
