Emma McClatchey/Little Village At least 33 state legislatures around the country, most of them controlled by Republicans, are working on bills that restrict voting. Iowa is one of them. “These bills are an unmistakable response to the unfounded and dangerous lies about fraud that followed the 2020 election,“ the Brennan Center for Justice said in a report on the bills published earlier this month. Republican leaders in the Iowa Legislature are fast-tracking SSB 1199, a Senate bill imposing new restrictions on voting and stripping local control over elections, as well the identical bill in the House, HSB 213. The House and Senate bills were introduced on Tuesday, and approved by a subcommittees that next day. The Senate State Government Committee and the House State Government Committee approved the bills on Thursday.

2.17.21: Iowa Governor Kim Reynold s comments on the COVID-19 Pandemic Earlier this month, Iowa was near the bottom in the country for vaccination rates. The Governor says the CDC now ranks Iowa 22nd in the nation and suspects Iowa is doing even better than that recent ranking with almost 500,000 vaccinations. Reynolds says Iowa will get 62,000 more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine next week. That’s up 24%. Also, the White House wants more vaccination clinics on weekends and Governor Reynolds says she fully supports this plan to allow people to get the vaccine during convenient times. Nebraska expects more than 60,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines to be available in the state this week as officials continue to focus on vaccinating everyone 65 and older across Nebraska. It’s not yet clear how many doses will be allocated this week to a new federal program that is distributing some virus shots through select pharmacies. Last week, that program received 5,700 doses of the vaccines.

Radio Iowa You are here: Home GOP lawmakers propose shorter early voting period in Iowa Iowa’s 29-day early voting period would be shortened to 18 days before an election under a bill Senator Roby Smith of Davenport is sponsoring. “Setting absentee voting at 18 days will limit voter remorse, the length of campaigning in the state and allow more time for informed voting,” Smith said. Republican Representative Bobby Kaufmann of Wilton has introduced a similar bill in the Iowa House. “One of the most significant thing I heard on the campaign trail was that the election season is a lot longer than it shoud be,” Kaufmann said last night during a House subcommittee meeting.
