The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams are on the road Friday when they take on the West Branch Bears. The Golden Hawk girls come into the game at 5-5 on the year, 5-4 in the River Valley Conference, after a 47-45 loss to the Wilton Beavers in Wellman on Tuesday. Phelan Hostetler led Mid-Prairie in the loss with 15 points. For the season, Mid-Prairie’s scoring leader is Maddie Nonnenmann at 12 points per game. She also has a team best seven boards per contest. Amara Jones leads the team with four assists per game and Myah Lugar has three steals per outing.
One KCII area girls’ basketball team is represented in the latest rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Winfield-Mt. Union comes in at #11 in the latest poll for class 1A. Bishop Garrigan holds the top spot in the class. The Wolves were perfect in the first half of the season with a 9-0 record including 4-0 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division play. Defense has been a huge part of their success giving up just 37 points a game and they lead the league in rebounds with 366, steals with 115, and blocks with 35.
WMU resumes play on Monday against Sigourney.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team is back on the road Monday when they travel to West Liberty to meet the Comets. Mid-Prairie is 4-3 on the season after a last second, 44-42 win at Monticello Saturday on a Phelan Hostetler shot as time expired. In the win over the Panthers, Mid-Prairie was led by Maddie Nonnenmann’s 19 points and Hostetler’s 13. On the season, Mid-Prairie is paced by two in double figures with Nonnenmann’s 12 points per game and Lugar’s 10 per contest. Nonnenmann also leads the team at six boards per game. Amara Jones leads the Hawks with four assists per game and Lugar averages a team best four steals per game.
The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves girls basketball team is drawing attention from around the state with their hot start to the season. WMU is currently 8-0 on the year and ranked in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Wolves check in at No. 11 in class 1A. They were ranked 14
th a week ago. Winfield-Mt. Union has wins this season over New London, WACO, Pekin, Danville, Van Buren, Central Lee, Mediapolis and Wapello. Kyndal Townsley and Bradie Buffington are the team leaders at 10 points per game. Buffington is the leader on the glass at eight boards per contest. Keely Malone has dished out a team best 2.3 assists. The Wolves are back on the floor one final time before Christmas when they meet Louisa-Muscatine in Winfield on Tuesday.
