Iowa s affordable housing funding has Des Moines developers lining up

Des Moines Register Des Moines-based developers are ready to jump on new state funding that helps drive down the cost of construction  and therefore, monthly rent  and make housing more affordable for the state s workforce.  Six project managers are seeking to capitalize on additional funding allocated to the Iowa workforce housing tax credit program for new housing in Des Moines. Another is applying for funds in West Des Moines.  Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a sweeping tax bill in June, portions of which provide money to help address the growing gap in Iowa s supply of affordable housing. The Legislature approved an increase of $20 million across two existing tax credit programs, plus an additional $4 million to state housing trust funds. The housing trusts are nonprofit organizations that help plan, build and rehabilitate housing units for low- to moderate-income tenants in all of Iowa s 99 counties.

NEWS 7 8 21: C19 Concern for Younger Nebraskans, MercyOne Vaccinations, Badgerow Building Update

1:40 A top doctor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center warns about a new surge of COVID-19 cases with younger people. The state recorded more than 450 cases last week, an increase of 55% from the week before. Dr. James Lawler says the increase isn’t a surprise given the presence of the highly contagious delta variant and the number of unvaccinated people in the state. He also told an Omaha TV station the summer could get “ugly” for people in the 20-to-50 year age group. He predicted the worst part of the pandemic is coming for this younger demographic. Data from the CDC shows that the state’s rate of new cases per capita ranked 23rd among the states last week.

Iowa s agriculture future changing with Nebullam indoor farm in Ames

Des Moines Register Forget Iowa s rich and abundant soil. If the future is growing lettuce vertically indoors, then the future is now. Tucked in a spacious room at the Iowa State University Research Park are walls upon walls of lettuce hugging shelves upon shelves of microgreens and tomato plants.  The indoor farm, called Nebullam, offers a startup subscription service for free delivery of fresh-grown produce to residents doorsteps throughout the Ames and Des Moines metros. Co-founder Clayton Mooney knows that feeding hundreds of people with walls of lettuce grown indoors seems improbable in a state famous for its endless fields of corn and soybeans. But it s a system he said he and fellow founder Danen Pool believe is the shape of things to come.
