Luther College’s wind turbine generates power in Decorah, Iowa, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021. Alliant Energy is building a $2.5 million, 2.5 megawatt battery system that will store energy generated by wind turbines and solar arrays in the area. The system consists of 360 lithium ion batteries each weighing 114 pounds. The system should be done with its conditioning and commissioning processes and go online sometime in March. The system will store power generated during off peak hours during the middle of the day by homeowners’ wind turbines and solar arrays, while homeowners are away from their houses, and return it to the grid when residents are back at their homes in the evening. Apps open for Iowa Restaurant and Bar Relief Program
Iowa bars and restaurants have begun to apply for another round of state grants to cover pandemic-related losses.
The grants are available to bars and restaurants that saw sales slump in the second and third quarters of 2020 compared to the year before.
“The one-time grants are intended to assist with short-term cash flow and award amounts, up to $25,000 will be tiered based on lost sales,” Governor Kim Reynolds says, “…to help them recover, bring their employees back to work and to keep their doors open.”
As owner and operator of Trackside Bar and Grill in Peosta, Lundgren is particularly well versed in what bars and restaurants have gone through in the past year in trying to adapt and survive amid the pandemic. That gave Lundgren a key vantage point in helping shape what state assistance for small businesses in Iowa might look like. Thankfully, Gov. Kim Reynolds listened.
Last week’s announcement that the Iowa Restaurant and Bar Relief Grant Program would provide one-time grants of up to $25,000 to businesses whose gross sales decreased in the second and third quarters of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 was equivalent to a life preserver tossed to these establishments.
Iowa is preparing to roll out about $195 million in funding to prevent evictions, Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham told The Gazette.
But the IEDA does not have the necessary information from the U.S. Department of Treasury to begin the program.
“We already have the money in our checking account,” Durham said. “But the reason it’s not out on the street or the program is not rolled out is because we have no guidance.”
Durham said the IEDA received information from the U.S. Department of Treasury under the Trump administration, but the change in presidential administrations with “very different philosophies” likely will result in a change in guidance.
